Are you worried about the rising cost of car insurance rates? If you plan on driving – no matter the distance or length of time – you need to be covered by Compulsory Third Party insurance at the least, and you may want to get a more comprehensive car insurance.

Although some policies are more affordable than others, the overall cost of coverage is on the rise. Once you better understand the reasons behind the rising cost of car insurance, you may be able to use this knowledge to find more opportunities to save.

Insurance Fraud

This is one of the causes of increased car insurance premiums. As long as fraud continues to be an issue, you can expect premiums to rise – even if only a little bit at a time. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about the approach that other drivers take with their insurance.

Why does this affect you and how much you pay for coverage? In short, it is the car insurance companies that take a financial hit when fraud is involved. In turn, they will typically charge all their customers more money to cover the risk of fraud.

Uninsured Drivers

Did you know that there are more uninsured drivers in the world today than ever before? This is a major problem in many countries, including here in Australia. With the number of uninsured drivers on the rise, car insurance companies are looking for ways to manage the financial problem uninsured drivers create.

The problem is this: uninsured drivers can be involved in driving accidents, and when this happens, somebody has to pay the bill. Typically, it falls to the insurer of other drivers with insurance involved in the accident – even if they are not at fault. That translates to higher premiums for those of us who do ensure we’re covered by car insurance.

Accidents on the Rise

Most drivers practice good safety while on the road. However, nobody is perfect and not every driver is cautious all of the time. For this reason, traffic accidents are becoming more common in Australia. Of course, a lot of this has to do with an increase in the number of licensed drivers on the roads overall.

When the number of driving accidents is on the rise – from minor fender benders to more serious collisions – insurers will tend to increase premiums as a means of mitigating their risk.

These are three reasons why car insurance premiums continue to rise, despite the fact that consumers may be facing tough economic times. While there are steps you can take to protect your own situation as a driver and as an insurance policyholder – such as staying safe on the road – there will always be a few elements that are beyond your control.

There are a variety of different options for car insurance cover in Australia. Many car insurance companies now include a choice of payment plans for your car insurance premiums, in addition to the cover options offered. Before you choose your car insurance payment type, however, explore all the options the insurer offers, and make sure you’re choosing the payment option that makes sense and saves you money.

Annual Car Insurance Payments

The old traditional car insurance payment option of a single annual payment is still available from many car insurers. When you opt for an annual car insurance premium, you pay the entire year’s car insurance cost in one lump sum. As cars have become more costly to insure, however, paying an entire year’s car insurance premium at one time has become difficult for some drivers, who simply can’t afford to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars all at once.

If you can make an annual car insurance payment, though, it’s typically still the cheaper way to pay. Many car insurance companies offer discounts for drivers who pay their insurance annually. If you’d like to save money by paying annually, you may want to start saving now for next year’s payment. Then, next year, funnel the money you would have paid in instalments into a savings account to have it ready for the next annual payment.

Quarterly or Twice-Yearly Premiums

Paying your car insurance premium quarterly or twice-yearly is less common nowadays than it used to be, but there are still a few insurers out there who offer these options. Paying twice-yearly may net you some savings on your premium, but usually not as much as paying annually.

Monthly Car Insurance Payments

As cars and car insurance become more costly, more car insurance companies have begun to offer monthly payment options for their customers, and this is now a common practice. While monthly payments are more convenient for many drivers’ budgets, they do come with some drawbacks.

Paying monthly means that if you miss a payment, or are overly late making a payment, your car insurance may be cancelled, leaving you without cover. In some cases, having a cancelled policy in your past may make it more difficult to find another insurer willing to take you on. Another drawback is that you often pay more for the convenience of paying monthly. The difference between making monthly or annual payments will vary from one insurance company to another, but can be substantial.

If paying monthly is important to you, you may be able to save yourself some money and have the peace of mind of knowing your payment is made on time every time by signing on for direct payments, which are taken out of your checking or savings account automatically. Some companies offer discounts for direct payment, and choosing this option means never worrying about getting the payment in on time — as long as you keep enough in your account to cover your payment, that is!

When you come to choose car insurance, it’s important to shop around and compare policies. The process of shopping for the best policy should begin even before you buy your car, as the classification of your vehicle may have an effect on your premiums. Some insurance companies don’t insure certain categories of vehicle at all. It’s important to consider this.

Your insurance premiums can be affected by a number of factors connected to the classification of your vehicle. The dollar value of your vehicle is just the start. The size of your car can also affect your premiums, with larger cars often costing more to insure than small ones. A truck or a van may also cost more to insure than a standard car.

Expensive Cars

Luxury cars with prestigious name badges such as Porsches typically involve higher premiums. Repairs tend to be more expensive than for average cars, and the cost of replacing such a vehicle would obviously be far higher, pushing up the cost of a possible claim and thus increasing the risk to the insurance company.

Prestige vehicles may also be more tempting targets for car thieves and vandals. Sports cars and cars which are designed for speed and high performance also attract significantly higher premiums as they are perceived as being at greater risk of being involved in an accident.

Modified Cars

Vehicles which have been modified may also be harder to insure. Modifications include major additions such as body kits and spoilers, but also less drastic changes like rims, woofers or tinted windows. These types of modifications may affect your premiums, and not every insurer will extend cover to modified cars. Consider the impact on your premiums, before committing to any major modifications to your vehicle or purchasing one which is already modified.

Specialist Car Insurance

There are insurance companies that specialise in vehicles like sports cars and modified cars. Such specialist insurers may offset the elevated risk by charging higher than usual premiums, by asking for higher excesses (an amount that you agree to pay towards every claim), or by limiting the maximum amount that you can claim. This may make them an expensive option, as your out-of-pocket costs on a claim may be very costly. Even so, they may be a viable alternative if you have a particularly exotic vehicle to insure.

Business Vehicles

A vehicle you use for work or business might require a different car insurance product than one for personal use, depending on your coverage needs and type of business and vehicle.

It’s vital that you are always up-to-date with your insurance company, both before and after insuring your car. Always keep them notified of any changes, such as a change of use or any modifications. If you neglect to mention important changes to your vehicle, your insurance company may refuse to pay out in the event of a claim.

As a car owner, you face certain risks whether your car is out on the road or parked in your garage at home. Accidents, theft, fire — these may cause headaches and expense for a car owner. Car insurance protects you by allowing you to pass the risk on to your insurance provider, at the cost of a regular payment.

Compare Car Insurance Types

There are several kinds of car insurance, most of them covering only a limited range of eventualities. To get more extensive cover for various forms of risk, you may want to consider comprehensive car insurance.

Compulsory third party (CTP) cover is required by Australian law to drive a vehicle on public roads. However, CTP only covers costs incurred when other people suffer death or injury in an accident that you were involved in. It doesn’t usually cover other eventualities. This means you may be unprotected in some situations if you only have CTP cover.

Risks not covered by CTP include damage to other people’s property if you’re involved in an accident with them; you may have to pay for such damage if you’re deemed to have some responsibility for the accident. Your own legal costs and vehicle repair or replacement costs in the event of an accident are another potential cost. CTP also doesn’t cover fire damage or theft, so if your car is affected by a fire or is stolen, you may have no protection unless you take out additional insurance.

Aside from CTP, there are three main levels of car insurance. Third party property insurance doesn’t cover injury or death, but it does indemnify you against having to pay for repairs or legal costs relating to damage to other people’s property if you are involved in a car accident. It doesn’t cover fire or theft. Third party, fire and theft takes care of all these eventualities, but doesn’t cover injury. The highest level, comprehensive car insurance, covers third party property damage, fire, theft, and other damage to your car in an accident.

Car Insurance Rates

Because comprehensive car insurance covers more eventualities than other lower levels of insurance, the insurance company is taking on a bigger share of the total risk. This means that rates for comprehensive car insurance are typically higher than for third party property insurance or for third party property, fire and theft policies.

A comprehensive policy may also cover you for specific additional forms of loss or damage, such as damage from floods or storms, or damage to windscreens. Choosing a comprehensive policy that offers this kind of protection may result in a higher premium, but may be worth the extra cost depending on your risk factor.

Car insurance policies typically specify that you will have to pay a certain amount of any claim. This is called your excess; you may be able to lower your overall premium by raising the excess you agree to pay, which saves you money in the short term but raises costs in the event of an accident.

You may also help keep your car insurance rates down by avoiding unnecessary modifications to your car, as things like tinted windows and kits can affect your insurance. Investing in prudent measures such as anti-theft devices may also reduce your premium.

Driving safely can help lower your car insurance rates in the long term; a history as a safe driver means lower premiums. Smaller, safer and less prestigious cars may attract lower rates than large vehicles or cars that are optimised for high performance, so consider insurance rates when choosing a car.

Renting a car for your holiday trip may be convenient, as long as you are not vulnerable to excessive car rental expenses that drain your travel budget. Take your time in researching car hire companies and customer feedback, to gauge the credibility of the company in a country foreign to you.

Here some pitfalls to avoid when you rent a car:

Pitfall #1: Restricting your search

Cast your net wide when you perform research on car rental companies. Get at least a few quotes from different sources, and consider speaking directly to one or more representatives to ask pertinent questions. Once you have compared your options, choose one that meets your needs and gives you fair value for money. If you limit your search and choose the first one that strikes your fancy without making much of a comparison, you may end up getting less for your money.

Pitfall #2: Letting someone under 25 book the rental

You can save money by having someone aged 25 years or older book and drive the rental car for you. The reason is that car rental companies see young drivers as a liability, and they may be charged a daily surcharge. You must nevertheless ensure that all the terms and conditions of your rental agreement are met, including giving the details of all the drivers if you intend to share driving duties, so you won’t be able to avoid the surcharge if any of the drivers are under 25.

Pitfall #3: Getting hit by extra fees

There are a few types of fee you may be charged by a car hire company; make sure you know what they are and how to avoid them:

Late Fees: Rental car companies may charge a fee if you return your car later than the agreed time and date. Plan your route, avoid peak hour traffic and allow plenty of travel time to return your rental car. Bear in mind that hourly rates for extra time may be high, and flat fees for late returns may also be expensive.

Fuel Charges: Do remember to fill your tank before returning your car, as your car rental company may charge you a refilling fee if you fail to do so. Ensure that the fuel tank is full when you hire the car, and return it in the same condition. You may be offered the option to prepay for a full tank, which saves you having to worry about filling up on petrol before returning the car; however, this means that you may end up paying for more petrol than you’ve used.

Pitfall #4: Ignoring car rental insurance

All car hire throughout Australia comes with a basic level of car insurance commonly known as Standard Liability or Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). However, that may still leave you liable for up to about $3,000 for any damages to the rental car. One way of covering yourself is to take out the optional excess reduction, which is an added daily fee paid to reduce the excess you will pay out of pocket in the event of an accident leading to a car insurance claim.

The average standard liability insurance in Australia leaves excesses in the region of $3300 that you may be responsible for paying in the event of an accident. If you choose to sign up for an optional excess reduction fee on your CDW, in early 2012 you’ll typically pay $23 to $27 extra per day throughout the car hire period, but this may reduce your excess considerably.

Alternatively, you may find that your car rental excess may be covered by your travel insurance policy, if you have one. Some travel insurance offers this type of cover subject to certain limits and their terms and conditions.

Pitfall #5: Renting for very short periods

You may get a better average rate per day if you rent a car for a longer period. Some car hire companies may offer a discounted rate for weekly rentals, or offer an extra day’s car rental free if you book a certain minimum number of days.

The next time you rent a car, be mindful of the pitfalls that could cost you dollars. The money you may save could be used for other travel costs, such as food, accommodation and entertainment expenses. It is best to plan your travels ahead of time to help you get value for money from your choice of car rental company.

There are specific procedures and requirements for CTP insurance claims in New South Wales. The Motor Accidents Authority is the state agency concerned with injury claims for road accidents. The various private insurance companies also have their own procedures.

You usually compare car insurance in order to match up quotes and find the policy that best fits your budget and needs. You might as well familiarize yourself with the different insurers’ varied claims processes while you’re at it. Road accidents occur when you least expect them. It is important that you know what to do when something unfortunate does happen on the road.

Essential steps if an accident occurs

Not every accident will result in the NSW police attending the scene. However, you must call the police immediately if:

there are fatalities or injuries

vehicles need to be towed away

any of the parties involved fails to stop or is uncooperative in exchanging driver and insurance details

If the police don’t attend the scene of the accident at the time, then you should report the accident to them within 24 hours. The significant document that this step produces is an Incident Report. A court of law, or your insurer, may ask you to show or submit a copy of this report later on.

You must now note the essential details of the accident, and exchange insurance information with the other driver. It is always an important consideration that your insurer will need to know who is legally at fault in a road accident. This is because NSW follows a common law fault system. You may owe or be owed compensation after an accident. Claiming can certainly be a smoother process when you have all the necessary information.

You should then contact your insurer. It is recommended that you include this step whether you actually plan on pursuing a claim or not. They may offer advice or information that would help you decide on your next steps.

For example, your insurer may help to arrange repairs if there is any damage to your vehicle. This is important to discuss with the insurer, because a car insurance claim may affect the following:

your options on renewing or getting a new policy

your future car insurance rates

your current no claims bonus

If your car needs only minor repairs that will cost less than or equal to the excess, it may be more advantageous in the long term to not make a claim.

Compulsory Third Party (CTP)

As you may know CTP cover, also called Greenslip cover in some states, is the legal minimum requirement in Australia for car insurance. New South Wales has its own laws regarding CTP insurance. According to NSW law, anyone injured in a road accident may be entitled to certain benefits, though there are several limitations on eligibility. The two important documents necessary to receive these benefits are:

the Accident Notification Form

the Personal Injury Claim Form

The first is open for anyone regardless of who was at fault. This form will help you to reimburse medical expenses or lost earnings. The compensation is limited to the first 6 months after the accident. It also only goes up to a maximum of $5,000. The form should be submitted within 28 days of the accident.

The second form is for personal injury compensation. You may claim this benefit if you can prove that the other driver was completely or mostly at fault. You also qualify if none of the parties involved were found responsible. You may still make a claim if you were partially at fault; however, the compensation you receive will be reduced. Children under 16 years old can receive this benefit regardless of fault.

Take note that this personal injury benefit is in addition to what you may receive through Accident Notification, as long as you fit the criteria for eligibility. Personal injury compensation also covers medical expenses and economic losses. The form should be submitted within 6 months of the accident.

Zurich Financial Services currently offers Compulsory Third Party (CTP) cover for residents in New South Wales. As the name implies, CTP cover is required for drivers in New South Wales, and Zurich is one of seven insurance providers who are authorized to provide CTP, also known as Green Slip cover, in NSW.

CTP cover

While CTP cover is required to insure drivers against personal injury liability claims when others are injured in an accident in which the driver is at fault, not all CTP policies offered in New South Wales are identical; costs for purchasing Green Slip cover through the authorized insurers may vary according to criteria such as an applicant’s driving history, and may include additional cover and convenience services.

Zurich Financial Services’ CTP cover can be purchased directly from the company. Zurich offers online purchase and renewal options for Green Slip cover. Their CTP cover in New South Wales includes electronic transfer of the driver’s CTP policy to the RTA in NSW, eliminating the need for drivers to supply proof of CTP cover themselves. The company promises competitive insurance rates.

‘At-Fault Driver’ cover

While the standard CTP cover covers only third parties who are injured when a driver who has CTP cover is at fault in an accident, leaving the driver responsible for the costs of any injuries he or she sustains, Zurich’s Green Slip cover also includes personal injury cover for drivers, at no extra charge, but with some limitations.

Zurich’s ‘At-Fault Driver’ cover pays drivers for personal injuries that result from a motor vehicle accident caused solely and directly by the driver, with limitations. The ‘At-Fault Driver’ cover does not cover:

drivers under the age of 25

drivers whose coverage is taken out on a quarterly or six-monthly basis

drivers who are under the influence of drugs, or alcohol over the legal limit, at the time of the accident

or drivers who have intentionally caused the accident in which they were injured

This is not a complete list of limitations; check the Zurich Financial Services full ‘At-Fault Driver’ policy for a complete list of exclusions.

Also for business

In addition to CTP cover for NSW, Zurich also offers motor fleet insurance cover for businesses with hire cars, chauffeur-driven fleets, limited transport fleets, mobile contractors, or plant and equipment hire and rental fleets. All motor fleet vehicle policies offered by Zurich must be purchased through an insurance broker.

If you compare car insurance in Australia, you’re likely to see insurance products from Suncorp or one of the many brands they own. Suncorp is the nation’s largest general insurance group and has over 8 million customers as well as over 15,000 employees.

Although car insurance is just one of Suncorp’s many offerings, it is the only one that we will discuss in this overview. Whether you want a basic level of cover or a comprehensive policy with all the extras, Suncorp has a range of policies and packages.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

If you want the broadest cover available, you should look at comprehensive car insurance which helps protect your car against many common occurrences. Comprehensive insurance covers things like:

accidental damage

fire damage

theft

malicious damage

storm, hail and flood damage

damage your car may cause to other people’s property

One of the advantages of comprehensive car insurance with Suncorp is that it also includes various extras that may be helpful when a claim is necessary, such as:

hire car after theft

repairs guaranteed for life

replacement of a new car (up to 2 years old) following total loss

paperless claims

There are also many other optional extras that may be included in a Suncorp car insurance policy, like:

hire car after an accident for up to 14 days

no claim discount protection

named driver option

windscreen and window glass damage

Fire, Theft & Third Party Property Damage

This cover is for those who don’t want or don’t need fully comprehensive cover, but still want more than just the required CTP insurance. Fire, Theft & Third Party Property Damage provides limited cover for the following:

damage to your car caused by fire

theft

damage to other people’s property in an accident where you are at fault

damage to your car caused by uninsured drivers (up to a set maximum limit)

Third Party Property Damage

For those who want only protection to cover their liability for damage they cause to other people’s property in a car accident, Third Party Property Damage provides just that. This less expensive option covers you for damage to other people’s property and damage to your car caused by uninsured drivers up to a limit. This option is sometimes chosen by those who own older, less valuable vehicles.

Compulsory Third Party (CTP)

In order to drive a vehicle on public roads in Australia, you must register the vehicle and it must have CTP insurance. This insurance was made compulsory to protect people who are injured in a car accident, and to protect the individual who caused the accident from having to pay the cost of their injuries.

In some states, when you pay your motor vehicle registration, your CTP insurance payment is included in the cost. In other states you may have a choice of CTP insurers. The price of CTP insurance is regulated, but although the cover is pretty standard, each insurer has their own precise policies.

With Suncorp CTP Insurance, you receive:

driver protection cover at no extra cost for eligible customers

access to an advisory team of health care and rehabilitation professionals

a claims process designed to optimise efficiency

Ways to Save

When it comes to comparing car insurance, price is a major concern for most, and you want to get the best car insurance cover for the best price. To help customers save money, Suncorp offers several discount programs including:

Family Discount

This discount offers 60% off a comprehensive motor vehicle premium to eligible customers. This is great for drivers under 25 who take out their own policy. To be eligible:

You or any listed driver must not have had any “at fault” claims or accidents in the past five years

You must have a parent who has a current comprehensive motor vehicle insurance with Suncorp

They must have a maximum no claim discount and have had no “at fault” claims in the last 12 months.

Certain vehicle exclusions do apply.

No Claim Discount

This discount may be as much as 60% off your comprehensive cover premium, depending on how long you’ve been driving and your driving record. The maximum discount level is Rating 1; once you’ve had a Rating 1 with the same insurer for two consecutive years and had no “at fault” claims during that time, Suncorp will give you that rating for life.

Multiple Policy Discount

If you hold multiple eligible policies with Suncorp, you may receive a discount of 15% on your car insurance policy.

Note: Always read the relevant Product Disclosure Statement before making any decision to buy insurance.

QBE is a well-known provider of car insurance and many other forms of insurance, though they do not offer private health insurance in Australia. Australia’s largest international insurance group, QBE has been around for over 100 years and currently operates in 49 countries.

For many people, car insurance is one of their primary insurance needs. QBE offers a variety of car insurance options, from comprehensive cover to budget plans. Here’s a look at QBE’s car insurance options:

QBE Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive car insurance is the most extensive car insurance cover available. It typically includes coverage against things like accident, fire, theft and liability for damage to other cars and property. QBE’s comprehensive policy also includes things like hire car following theft or accident, emergency accommodation and transport, lifetime repair guarantee and more.

Comprehensive cover is the broadest cover available, and, therefore, comprehensive car insurance rates are typically the most expensive. Depending on your vehicle and situation, comprehensive cover may or may not be the right choice for you.

Getting Cheaper Car Insurance

If you are considering a comprehensive policy, you may be able to save some money with one of these options:

Preferred Driver

QBE offers a preferred driver option that goes along with the comprehensive policy. If you are over the age of 24, and if no one under the age of 24 will be driving the car, you can receive a discount on the price of your comprehensive policy.

Nominated Driver

QBE also offers a nominated driver option to help lower the cost of the comprehensive policy. In order to qualify for this option, there can be no more than two drivers on the policy with the main driver over the age of 21 and the second driver over the age of 19.

Third Party, Fire and Theft

If you don’t want comprehensive cover, but do want a bit more than just third party only, then third party, fire and theft is another option. This adds benefits for loss or damage caused by fire or theft, and QBE also offers to cover a hire car in the event of theft.

Third Party Property Cover

Third party property insurance from QBE covers damage you may cause to another person’s car or property, but not your own car or personal possessions. While it doesn’t provide the many benefits of comprehensive car insurance, third party property cover is usually a cheaper choice.

CTP Insurance

QBE also offers Compulsory Third Party Insurance, also known as CTP Insurance or Green Slip Insurance in some states. This covers injuries sustained in the event of an accident involving your vehicle.

Optional Additional Benefits

If you insure your car with QBE, you have various optional additional benefits which include: 4 year new car replacement policy, no claim bonus protection, lifetime no claim bonus protection, hire car after accident, excess-free windscreen and window glass protection, and monthly payment plans.

More Ways to Save on Car Insurance

When choosing a car insurance company and policy, cost is a major concern to most people. QBE offers various ways to help keep the cost of cover down. In addition to the preferred driver and nominated driver options for comprehensive plans, there are various other ways to enjoy discounts on your premium including:

New car discount, helping you save on insurance after purchasing a new car,

Over 50 discount for older drivers,

Flexible excesses, allowing you to reduce your premium by choosing a higher excess,

No claim bonus discount, meaning those who have been claim-free for 12 months or more can receive a discount of up to 60 percent.

The QBE website offers more information about various plans and, if you are a client, you can make claims and pay premiums online.

Car insurance requirements may differ from region to region. This information is specific to South Australia, and should not be applied to other regions.

Whether you’re considering a move to Adelaide, or already live in South Australia, it’s a good idea to brush up on the car insurance requirements for your area. Not having the cover you need is not only courting financial disaster, it’s also risking legal trouble — stiff penalties can result if you drive without the required insurance in Adelaide or South Australia, so it pays to know what you need.

Required Car Insurance Cover

To drive a car in Adelaide, you’re required to register that car, and to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance cover. The good news is, as long as you register your car, you’re good to go, since a portion of your registration cost goes toward providing your CTP cover. If you’re considering forgoing your registration to save money, think again. You’ll end up paying as much or more in penalties as you would have for registering and insuring your car in the first place.

CTP Cover in Adelaide

While the required CTP cover is undeniably valuable, it’s not comprehensive. CTP provides compensation for personal injury or death for people who are injured in an accident deemed to be your fault. It does not cover persons who contribute to their injuries, such as those who do not wear seatbelts, nor does it cover an injured driver who is entirely at fault for the accident. And it does not cover damages to vehicles or other property.

Cover for City Driving

Adelaide is Australia’s fifth largest city, and for you as a driver, that means dealing with all the hazards that living in a city of over one million people pose. City living means lots of cars on the road, stiff competition for parking spaces, and the car-related crime that is inherent to large metro areas.

To protect yourself and your car, there are several other additional car insurance products that you can purchase:

A comprehensive car insurance policy will protect you against many common motor-related incidents, be it theft, an accident, vandalism or a hit-and-run. In large cities like Adelaide, where you often park your car out of sight, or drive in heavy traffic, comprehensive car insurance offers you extensive car insurance cover. This helps to protect the investment you have in your car, and also protect you against damages that you may cause to others’ cars or property as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Third party property policies will protect you against claims made against you for damages to another’s vehicle or property. If you are at fault in an accident, third party property cover will cover the costs of repairing other cars or property that is damaged as a result. However, in most cases, your car will not be covered, so this insurance may not be sensible if you have a car that is of a high value.

Driving in a large city like Adelaide comes with challenges. Make sure you have the car insurance cover you need to meet those challenges head-on.
